Rev. J. Steven Reynolds has been the pastor of the First Baptist Church of Waverly since 1994. After receiving his Masters of Divinity degree from Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary in 1981, Pastor Steve has served in churches in Vermont and Pennsylvania prior to his coming to Waverly. He was ordained by the First Baptist Church of Revere, Massachusetts and his ordination is fully recognized by the American Baptist Churches of the USA. He has been involved in a number of ministries including a number of evangelistic programs, youth conferences and hospital chaplaincies. He was enrolled in the Church Growth Academy and he is currently helping to lead his congregation in becoming a "reaching and teaching" church (Matthew 28:18-20)in the 21st century.
In April of 2001, he attended the Billy Graham School of Evangelism in Denver, Colorado and was an attendee at the 2002 National Pastors Convention in San Diego. In June of 2007, he was involved in the Franklin Graham festival in Binghamton, New York. In 2008, Pastor Steve taught a course in "Church Administration" and in 2009, he taught a course on "Worship" for the American Baptist Lay Studies program in New York State.
He has also been involved in a number of mission projects including the Hurricane Andrew effort, the New York State North Country Ice Storm cleanup, clean up following the June 2006 flood, the Bridge (a local ministry to the poor), inner city missions projects as well as two overseas missions project in the Dominican Republic. He has also been involved in the community including some volunteer work for the American Red Cross, the Chaplaincy program at the Robert Packer Hospital in Sayre, PA and the Tioga County Medical Reserve Corps.
Theologically, he is an evangelical and has the desire to preach Christ crucified, resurrected and coming again. He is also committed to the authority of the Bible and tries to apply its teachings to everyday life within the context of the 21st century.
Pastor Steve is married and has two grown daughters as well as two granddaughters. His hobbies include watching sports of all kinds (he has been called the "Bleacher Preacher"), weather watching, reading, writing, computers and collecting Christian contemporary music. He is also known for his sense of humor (though that might be debatable if you listen to his jokes!!).
